Waste Reduction Challenge

Earle Brown Families! Are you interested in finding out how to be a "Friend of the Earth" by reducing your waste at home? Become involved in the Earle Brown Family Waste Reduction Challenge! (BCHS families will have a chance to do this in round 2!). Coming home this week is a Home Recycling Survey for families, to be returned after spring break. Based on this survey 50 families will be chosen to participate in a 3 month long challenge- those that participate will receive $10 gift card from Cub Foods at the end of the challenge. Education on how to reduce your waste at home will be provide in several evening family gatherings (families only need to attend one-dates flexible) that will include fun activities and refreshments- interpreters will be provided.

Also included in the survey is a chance for your child to sign up for a student Green Team. Earle Brown Student Green Teams will meet once a week after school- one team of 1-3 graders (Tuesday 2:30-3:30 p.m.), and one team of 4-6 graders (Thursday 2:30-3:30 p.m.). Students, if interested, please write a short paragraph (2-3 sentences) on why you would like to be an Earle Brown "Friend of the Earth". The teams will be limited to 10 students each, and are open to all students whether or not enrolled in the YMCA after school programs or Bright Start. Transportation home will not be provided unless you are a part of the YMCA after school program.

And one last item included in the survey coming home- on the back is a poster contest for the upcoming Brooklyn Center EarthFest. Mark you calendar for this fun and informative event- now in its third and very successful year! It will be on Saturday, April 14 at Brooklyn Center High School. Will Steger, world famous polar explorer and environmental activist, will be kicking off the event at noon in the auditorium. Exhibits and activities, food and fun will be in the gym from 1-4 p.m. The theme of this year's EarthFest is ONE EARTH, ONE FAMILY, and students are invited to use their originality, creativity and imagination to submit a poster illustrating this theme. Winning entries will be displayed at EarthFest, and three talented students will receive a $10.00 Target gift card.

All of the above- the Home Recycling Survey, the Green Team sign up, and poster entries, must be returned to your student's teacher by Friday March 23.
