Superintendent's Message

Superintendent Mark Bonine began his service to Brooklyn Center in 2013 after 28 years at Minneapolis Public Schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and associate superintendent.

In Minneapolis, Bonine supervised “turnaround schools,” which served the school district’s most academically and socially challenged students. Superintendent Bonine is a passionate educator who believes firmly that all students can succeed, and in 2006 he was recognized at the Governor’s State of the State Address for leading increases in student achievement.

As a fervent advocate for accountability, transparency and professional growth, Bonine was was one of the first principals in Minnesota to implement the Teacher Advancement Program  (Q-Comp) to support teacher professional development and evaluation. In Minneapolis, Bonine served on the leadership team that developed one of the most comprehensive teacher and principal evaluation systems in the state.

In his first months as superintendent, Bonine has already proven himself an accomplished and effective leader. Bonine has:

  • Personally attended Listening and Learning community engagement sessions to learn more about Brooklyn Center from families and staff
  • Reduced the statutory operating debt by nearly $1 million, with a plan to eliminate the debt by 2015
  • Implemented a teacher and principal evaluation program with a focus on supporting professional growth
  • Restarted student government, a leadership program in which students feel welcome to develop their leadership skills and discuss concerns

With a strong foundation now in place, Superintendent Bonine will continue to center his focus on student achievement and fiscal responsibility by:

  • Accelerating student achievement
  • Increasing organizational effectiveness and efficiency
  • Establishing public trust and confidence
  • Developing a five-year strategic plan
